U. S. Army Distinguished Service Medal The Army Distinguished Service Medal is awarded
to any person who, while serving in any capacity with the U. S. Army, has distinguished himself by exceptionally meritorious service to the Government in a duty of great responsibility. The performance must be such

Bronze Star, all branches Instituted in 1944 for all branches of the service, the criteria
for the awarding of the Bronze Star are the performance of an act of distinctive heroic or meritorious achievement not involving participation in aerial flight, while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States.
Awards may be made for acts of heroism, performed under circumstances as described, which are of lesser degree than required for the award of the Silver Star. |
Navy Cross, current issue as awarded to U.S. Navy and U. S. Marine Corps personnel
The Navy Cross is the second highest ranking medal in both the Navy and Marine Corps, only below the Congressional Medal of Honor in award precedence. It is the Department of the Navy equivalent
to the Army Distinguished Service Cross, and is only awarded in extreme acts of heroism or extraordinary risk of loss of life. |
Silver Star, all branches The Silver Star was established by Act of Congress 9 July 1918 and is awarded to a
person who, while serving in any capacity within the Armed Forces, is cited for gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States, while engaged in military operations involving conflict against an opposing force.
The required gallantry, while of a lesser degree than that required for the Distinguished Service Cross or Navy Cross, must nevertheless have been performed with marked distinction.
